INFORMATION FOR DOCTORAL DEGREES IN ETHICS AND HISTORY OF MEDICINE

Students of medicine at the RUB have the opportunity to write a doctoral thesis at the Institute of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine on a topic of medical ethics or history. Individual regulations are required for students from other faculties.

Since medical ethics and history of medicine are interdisciplinary subjects using methods that are often not taught in medical studies, medical students must first familiarize themselves with the respective working methods. This entails additional work and time and usually requires an above-average scientific interest. Therefore, students with a double degree (e. g. medicine and philosophy) are particularly suitable for a doctorate with us.

Topics for the medical dissertation are usually assigned within ongoing research projects and are personally supervised there. Our doctoral students often work simultaneously as student assistants and are involved in the work flow of the institute. As a doctoral student, you regularly participate in our research colloquium. Therefore, a dissertation during the practical year or in parallel with full professional activity is hardly possible. In addition to writing your dissertation, we expect you to participate actively in the publication of your research results.

The current research priorities and third-party funded projects of our institute can be found on our homepage. Please inform yourself and contact us if you are interested.
